Penny’s Tragic Story

Penny’s Tragic Story

Penny’s Tragic Story

In 1995, my spouse and I welcomed Penny, a precious shelter dog, into our lives. Penny’s previous struggles, which were showcased on a local morning TV program, were a part of her short yet tumultuous existence.

Penny, a mix of poodle and terrier breeds, bore the scars of over two years of mistreatment by her former owner in her soulful brown eyes.

Penny swiftly brought happiness to our home and filled our hearts with affection.

A Unique Dietary Challenge

Unfortunately, shortly after being welcomed into our home, Penny encountered a digestive issue. Following the vet’s advice, she was put on a specialized diet consisting of prescription dog food.

Regrettably, Penny showed clear disinterest in this particular food from the beginning.

Despite bringing this concern to the veterinarian’s attention, we were advised to persist and overlook her reluctance, with reassurances that hunger would eventually persuade her to accept the prescribed diet.

Although we made attempts to comply, we found it increasingly difficult to witness Penny suffer from lack of nourishment. Despite our best intentions, we placed our trust in the vet-endorsed dog food, guided by the packaging that resembled a medicinal product with its scientific labeling.

An Ingenious Strategy That Shows Results — Temporarily

We discovered a clever method to mask the dog food by blending our regular table meats with the prescribed dog food.

This approach appeared to be effective.

Over the years, we consistently served Penny variations of the same combination of prescribed dog food intertwined with our table food, be it chicken, beef, pork, or even shrimp.

Penny never truly embraced her mealtime fusion. She simply endured it, occasionally spending up to fifteen minutes sorting through the blend to steer clear of the manufactured components.

Cautionary Tale of Well-Intentioned Advice

In 2007, a significant change took place for Penny after an injury. She started to lose her appetite, refusing to eat despite our efforts to entice her with different foods.

Our new vet recommended trying canned cat food, believing its higher meat content would be more appealing to Penny—and she was right. The change worked, and Penny started eating again.

However, as Penny showed signs of severe weakness and weight loss, we realized her diet might be the cause. We switched back to her original food combination, but the damage was done.

Penny’s health deteriorated rapidly. Her chronic ear infections worsened, she continued to lose weight, and on December 1, she became immobile. We made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her at 9:30 that morning.

The Critical Error to Avoid When Selecting Dog Food

As I write this, it’s still a tough task to hold back my tears. The heartbreaking incident involving Penny made me realize something I had overlooked while caring for my family dogs throughout the years.

I had underestimated the importance of the nutritional composition and safety of commercial dog food.

In 2007, the U.S. government issued a notorious pet food recall, which was a shock to many. Unfortunately, Penny’s cat food brand was later found on the FDA’s list, leading to concerns about her safety.

Regrettably, we had already disposed of the remaining cans, making it impossible to cross-reference the lot numbers with the official list at that point.

Did the contaminated food contribute to Penny’s demise? Or was it the subpar nutrition from her predominantly corn-based diet that we later uncovered?

Throughout all the years of looking after Penny, we never imagined that the food we provided could pose a threat to her life.

We believed that by investing in a premium food and supplementing it with quality meat, we were offering her the best possible nourishment.

However, it seems that we may have unintentionally compromised the essential mineral content of her diet, depriving Penny of vital nutrients.

Regardless, the dog food tainted with melamine was likely the primary factor in her tragic passing.
